Parent & Family Compact 26-27

Each school that receives Title I, Part A funding must work together with parents to create a School-Parent Compact, which is a written agreement explaining how the school, parents, and students will share the responsibility for supporting student learning and helping every child succeed. As part of the school’s Parent and Family Engagement Plan, the compact outlines what the school will do to support learning, what parents can do at home, how students will take responsibility for their own learning, and how families and the school will partner to help children meet the state’s academic standards. The goal of the compact is to ensure that everyone understands their role in helping students achieve their best.

Commitment From Our School

Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s challenging State academic standards.

Cone Elementary will provide high-quality curriculum and instruction through GCS-approved instructional materials aligned to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Teachers will use data-driven instruction, collaborative planning, differentiation, small-group instruction, student-centered learning, and culturally responsive practices to meet the needs of all learners. Staff will participate in professional learning and use academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports to create a safe, supportive, and effective learning environment.

Hold parent-teacher conferences (at least annually in elementary schools) during which this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement.

Parent-teacher conferences will be offered at least annually and as needed throughout the school year. Families will have opportunities to discuss the Compact, student progress, classroom expectations, attendance, assessment results, and ways to support learning at home during fall conferences, report card conferences, requested meetings, IEP/MTSS meetings when applicable, and other scheduled family meetings.

Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress.

Cone Elementary will provide parents with frequent updates on student progress through interim/progress reports, quarterly report cards, teacher communication, parent conferences, assessment reports, student work samples, ClassDojo/Canvas updates, and district/state assessment results when available. Teachers will communicate academic strengths, areas for growth, and strategies families can use at home.

Provide parents with reasonable access to staff.

Families may access staff through scheduled conferences, phone calls, emails, ClassDojo messages, Canvas communication, school events, and meetings by appointment. Teachers and staff will respond to family communication in a timely manner and will offer in-person, phone, or virtual meetings when appropriate. Families may also contact the school office to request support or schedule time with teachers, counselors, support staff, or administrators.

Provide parents with opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and to observe classroom activities.

Cone Elementary will invite families to volunteer, participate, and observe through school events, classroom activities, field trips, family engagement nights, PTA/PTO or school-based opportunities, and other approved volunteer roles. Parents may request classroom visits or observations by appointment. Volunteer opportunities will be shared through ClassDojo, newsletters, the school website, flyers, and staff communication. Families will be supported in completing any required volunteer/background check process.

Ensure regular two-way, meaningful communication between family members and school staff that is, to the extent practicable, in a language that family members can understand.

Cone Elementary will maintain regular two-way communication with families through ClassDojo, Connect Ed, Canvas, newsletters, flyers, phone calls, emails, conferences, school events, and the school website. Staff will provide opportunities for families to ask questions, share concerns, and give feedback. Translation features, translated materials, and interpreter support will be used when practical so communication is provided in a language families can understand.

These activities will help families understand curriculum, assessments, student progress, and practical strategies to support learning at home
