Discover Cone

A welcoming PreK–5 community where every Cougar is supported and challenged to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Through strong instruction, joyful learning experiences, meaningful family and community partnerships, and opportunities that connect learning to students’ futures, we help every child build the skills and confidence to succeed in school and beyond.

Experience Why Families Choose Us

Cone is a school where relationships, belonging, joy, and high expectations go hand in hand. Our Cougars are encouraged to Choose Growth, Show Kindness, Create Excellence, and live out P.A.W.S. every day, while our staff and families work together to make sure every child feels known, supported, challenged, and celebrated.

We are......Still Climbing. Still Shining.

Student supports

Cone uses a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) to respond to students’ needs across academics, attendance, behavior, and social-emotional development. Supports may include differentiated and small-group instruction, progress monitoring, Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions, individual problem-solving, attendance supports, behavior supports, counseling services, and family collaboration.

Our student support team includes school counseling, social work, Exceptional Children services, and English language/multilingual learner support, along with administrators, classroom teachers, and intervention staff who collaborate to determine appropriate supports. Families are also supported through conferences, ClassDojo and other communication tools, translation/interpreter resources when needed, and GCS Family Academy workshops and resources

Points of Pride

Student Growth: Cone MET Expected Growth for the 2025–2026 school year, reflecting the hard work of our students and staff while continuing to push toward even greater outcomes.

A Strong Legacy: Cone has served the Greensboro community for more than 90 years. Our current historic building was constructed in 1935, and today we serve a diverse community that includes students and families from many backgrounds and countries.

Literacy & Future Readiness: Schoolwide literacy growth and early college and career awareness through the Guilford Guarantee are major priorities for 2026–2027. Cone’s plan includes career-connected experiences across classrooms throughout the year.

Family & Community Partnerships: We intentionally create opportunities for families to participate in their child’s education through curriculum events, family learning nights, conferences, STEM experiences, community partnerships, volunteer opportunities, and GCS Family Academy resources.

A Culture of Growth, Kindness & Excellence: Our three tenets—Choose Growth, Show Kindness, and Create Excellence—work alongside our schoolwide P.A.W.S. expectations to help students become responsible, cooperative, respectful learners who give their best. Cone’s published PAWS expectations are Practice Responsibility, Act with Cooperation, Work to Do Your Best, and Show Respect.

Academic Programs and Opportunities

Cone provides standards-aligned instruction in reading, math, science, and other content areas using GCS-approved high-quality instructional materials, with differentiation, small-group instruction, collaborative planning, and data-driven supports to meet individual student needs.

A major 2026–2027 focus is literacy across the school, including foundational reading skills in K–2 and intentional reading, writing, vocabulary, discussion, and comprehension across the upper grades. Our Literacy Pathways work also connects literacy to student interests, careers, field trips, family engagement, and future readiness.

Students also participate in the Guilford Guarantee, which introduces elementary students to careers and helps them begin connecting their interests and classroom learning to future possibilities. GCS describes elementary school as the “Excite” stage of the Guarantee, where students develop early career awareness.

The Cone Media Center is part of the weekly specials rotation and provides experiences in literacy, research, technology, and STEAM, while helping students discover the joy of reading and develop critical-thinking skills.

For students who need additional academic support, Cone also provides extended-learning opportunities such as Clever Cougars Club, targeted after-school tutoring for identified students in Grades 3–5, and Saturday Academy, which provides additional learning based on current student data and needs.
